Week 4 (no)progress – Strolling Down Ambush Alley

Unfortunately my sinus flared up early in the week and totally took the wind out of my sails. I was hoping to get 2 batches of insurgents finished this week but it wasn’t to be. I did however order a bag of 100 straight corks from Amazon which will let me paint up larger batches of minis. At the moment I only have 12 corks that I use to mount minis. on with blu-tac when I’m …

Week 3 progress – Strolling Down Ambush Alley

This is just a quick update this week. I’ve finished the 2nd batch of Flytrap Factory Taliban and the 3rd batch of 12 is about 50-60% done. To speed things up I’ve cut out the highlight shade and they look fine with just the dark shade and the base shade. Mixing highlight shades of 5 or 6 colours is quite time consuming. I’ve also added some extra miniatures that have been sitting in storage – 32 Rebel …

Week 2 progress – Strolling Down Ambush Alley

Week 2 progress – Strolling Down Ambush Alley

Things are still moving, albeit a bit slower than I would like. On the workbench is the second batch of Flytrap Factory Taliban though painting is slow. I think my normal method of painting 12 at a time might not be holding up when dealing with irregular forces. The eclectic mix of colours and equipment is the problem so I think I need to at least double the batch size to make it more efficient.  I’ve …

Peter Pig 15mm moderns review

I’ve just received an order from Peter Pig of some packs from their modern AK-47 range. I had ordered a few packs of US Marines to make up a Marine squad plus a pack of hardened militia to see if they could be used as a force similar to the Afghan National Police, and finally a pack of African militia to be used as Middle Eastern insurgents. It’s been almost 20 years since I ordered from Peter Pig so …

Topiary ball foliage

Topiary ball foliage

I made a bit of a discovery in a local discount shop today. They are selling small topiary balls for £5 which are basically big balls of plastic leaves similar to artificial aquarium plants. What makes them interesting is that the plastic foliage can easily be popped off as they are grouped together with 4 stalks on a plastic base. Each group is about 20mm-25mm high as can be seen in the photo below. For …

Week 1 progress – Strolling Down Ambush Alley

This is the first of what I hope will be weekly reports on what work I’ve done on this project over the past 7 days. Being the first week, a lot of my time has been spent planning what needs to be done and taking stock of what I have that will be of use. There has been some tangible progress though, the 70ish Flytrap Factory Taliban I have that will be other insurgents have …

A Stroll Down Ambush Alley 1 – Setting my goals

This is part of a series of posts documenting this project from start to finish. You can find links to all the posts on the main project page – A Stroll Down Ambush Alley Before I start this I need to know what I want to achieve. This will stop me wandering off and doing something else. Once something is written down it’s easier to commit to. Project Goals I will play all the scenarios in …

A new project – retro Ambush Alley

Its been a while since I updated this blog, as usual real life gets in the way. Over the past year or two I’ve been more than guilty of shiny shiny syndrome, jumping from one thing to the next and finishing nothing. So, because of that I’d decided to not buy any new miniatures until the lead pile had been reduced. But even then I can’t focus on one thing at a time. What I …

I’m not dead yet

I’m not dead yet

Apologies to all who follow the blog, as per usual real life has taken over most of my spare time and I have neglected the little lead people. But I’m now back on the wagon, furiously varnishing just about everything I’ve painted over the past few years. I’m just lucky none of them were damaged, not a mistake I’ll be making again. I’ve also called a halt to buying any new miniatures until I can …

Power generator and some soft transport

Power generator and some soft transport

I’ve been more productive in the past few weeks than I have been for a long time. I’ve set up a painting workflow that seems to be helping me get things done. More on that in another post maybe. First off are 2 Matchbox vehicles that will act as generic soft transport. Not 100% happy with the green I’ve used, I think it’s a bit dark.   10 years ago I ordered some 6mm sci-fi …
